You don’t need to match a HeatShield liner to use their crown products, and we’ve applied the same system to chimneys with DuraFlex and Gelco liners in place.

Where compatibility matters is age. HeatShield has updated the sealant chemistry twice since we started installing it, and the older SealTite formula from the mid-2010s had a shorter lifespan in cold climates. If your crown was done before 2018, there’s a good chance you’re looking at the older product. The newer CrownCoat sealant holds up better through New Jersey winters, but no crown treatment is a permanent fix. With a chimney that sees Passaic’s snow and ice, plan on inspecting the crown every three years and resealing the cracks before they open up.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on the fireplace wall or ceiling nearby. This means water has already made its way through the crown and into the masonry. The crown repair coating has failed somewhere and water is traveling, not just sitting.
• Flaking or peeled sections of sealant on the crown. The CrownCoat layer will start to lift at the edges when UV and freeze cycles have broken it down. If you can see bare mortar showing through, it’s time.
• White mineral deposits on the brick face near the top of the chimney. That’s efflorescence, and it means water is moving through the masonry and carrying salts out. In Passaic, this shows up most in the first warm weeks after a freeze.
• Small pieces of mortar or sealant on the roof or in the gutter near the chimney. If the chimney is shedding material, the crown has already begun breaking up from ice expansion.
• A musty smell in the fireplace after rain. Moisture is getting into the flue and not drying out. It doesn’t take much water to make that smell, but it only gets worse.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground. Look for signs of sealant flaking, water stains inside the house, or pieces of material in the gutter. Take a photo with your phone and zoom in. That tells you whether something is visible, but it won’t tell you how deep the damage goes.

The actual crown repair means working on a roof with slope, kneeling at the chimney lip, and applying chemical sealant that bonds differently in cold weather. We’ve done enough of these that the risks are second nature, but for a homeowner on a ladder, it’s not a weekend project. Also, whoever’s up there needs to know the difference between a crown issue and a flashing leak. If it’s flashing, a crown coat won’t stop the water.
