• Smoke backing into the room on startup. The damper is not opening far enough, usually because the cable has stretched or the handle bracket has pulled loose from the firebox wall. You get a partial opening, weak draft, and a face full of smoke on a cold start.
• Rattling or banging noise on windy Passaic nights. The lid is loose enough for wind to lift it and drop it. That’s metal on tile, and repeated impact will chip the tile edge and eventually crack the lid.
• Rust streaks on the firebox floor under the cable. Condensation is running back down the cable from the top mount. This is a corrosion problem that starts on the roof side and works its way down; by the time you see it inside, the upper cable is usually compromised.

There’s a part of this you can check safely from the ground: open and close the damper and feel for smooth travel, listen for scraping, and look for rust dust on the cable above the handle. That tells us what we’re walking into. But the actual repair means being on the roof, working over an open flue, and handling a spring-loaded lid under tension. Gelco lids use a coil spring that keeps the plate closed; if that spring lets go while you’re handling it, you’re taking a heavy steel disc to the hands or worse. Same goes for the cable: it runs through the flue and if it snaps while you’re tugging on it from below, a flailing steel cable inside a masonry chimney is not something you want to be in the same room with.
