Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Passaic Owner’s Guide

Gelco builds a solid product, but nothing lasts forever in Passaic weather. A cap sized for an 8×8 will not seat correctly on an 8×13, and forcing it is how you get a cap that whistles in a north wind and lets rain blow straight in.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the most common first clue. Rain is getting past the cap and running down the flue. In Passaic, where we get heavy spring downpours followed by hard freezes, that water can crack the masonry from the inside out within two seasons.
• Animal noises or droppings below the damper. A bent or missing spark-arrestor mesh means raccoons, squirrels, and birds have an open path. We have pulled full squirrel nests out of flues where the cap looked fine from the ground but the side mesh was torn at the seam.
• Visible rust or flaking at the cap’s base plate. Gelco caps are built to resist rust, but years of creosote acids and dampness will eventually eat through the seams. Once the base plate perforates, the cap is no longer protecting the flue, only pretending to.
• A cap that has shifted or is sitting at an angle. High winds off the Passaic River can shift an under-tightened cap. If the cap has moved, the seal is broken, and water is getting into the mortar joint where the cap meets the crown.
• Draft problems that get worse when the wind shifts. A bent cap or one with the wrong hood height can push smoke back into the room. If you’re getting smoke on mild days and no smoke on calm days, the cap is interfering with the flue’s breathing rather than helping it.

DIY or Call Us?

If you are comfortable on a ladder and have a clear view of the cap, you can safely check whether the spark-arrestor mesh is intact, whether the cap is level, and whether the base plate is still seated flush against the flue tile. You can also confirm the cap size by measuring the outside dimension of the flue tile, not the inside opening.

What we do not recommend is pulling the old cap yourself on a two-story Passaic rowhouse roof. Roof pitch, loose slate, and a cap that has corroded onto the flue tile are the three things that turn a simple swap into a fall. The same goes for grinding off rusted fasteners without a stable work platform.
