• The handle or cable moves freely with no resistance. This usually means the cable has slipped out of its bracket or the plate detached up top. The damper isn’t sealing, and the flue is open to the weather.
• The damper only partially closes. Soot and creosote build-up around the seating edge is the typical culprit. DuraFlex lock-tops are forgiving, but a quarter-inch of crust along the rim will keep the plate from dropping flush.
