• Rainwater shows up in the firebox after a storm. A top-sealing damper doubles as a rain cap when it’s closed. If you’re getting water, the plate is either rusted through or the frame gasket has worn flat.
• The handle locks up entirely. This is the cable seized inside its housing, usually from creosote baked on during long burn seasons and then frozen solid in Passaic’s January cold. Forcing the handle just snaps the cable internally.
• You hear the plate rattle on windy days. That’s the cable retaining nut backed off, or the hinge pin worn loose. Left alone, the plate can shift out of position and the wind will work the cable until it frays through.
