Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
The crown sits at the very top of the chimney, sealing the gap between the flue tile or liner and the masonry shell. DuraFlex makes their living on the liner side of things, so the crown repair we do has to work with whatever DuraFlex liner system is already in the chimney. That includes their 316L stainless smooth-wall liner, the Pro series in both 316 and 316Ti alloy (that’s the one with the extra titanium for corrosion resistance), and the Alpha flexible liner if the home has an older installation.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha Passaic homeowners run into: if the crown repair involves a new top plate or termination collar, the inside diameter has to match the DuraFlex liner OD exactly. A liner that measures 6 inches inside is running about 6-1/4 to 6-3/8 outside, and a sloppy-fit crown or top plate will leak even if it looks tight from the ground. When we recast a crown, we form the opening to the liner’s actual measured OD, not a catalog guess. Aftermarket crown sealant and flexible crown-coat products are perfectly fine for a DuraFlex system, provided they’re rated for masonry-to-metal transitions and applied at the right temperature. We use commercial-grade products from Gelco and Copperfield for the sealant layer over the crown, and we stock both OEM DuraFlex termination parts and quality aftermarket equivalents in the truck. The aftermarket stuff is fine for most jobs. The OEM parts are worth it when the termination has to pass a visual inspection or when the liner is a Pro series and you want that original alloy match.
Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Chunks of crown on the roof or in the gutter. Freeze-thaw cycling cracks the crown slowly over Passaic winters. Once pieces start coming off, water is getting into the masonry and accelerating the damage.
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. If the crown isn’t shedding water, the water works down the chase and shows up as a brown ring on drywall, often months after the actual leak happened.
- Efflorescence or soft brick at the chimney top. The white powdery stuff on brick is water-soluble salts pulled out of masonry. It means water is moving through the chimney, and the crown is the first thing we check.
- Rust on the DuraFlex top plate or termination cap. When the crown seal fails around the liner, condensation and rainwater sit right on that metal collar. Rust there spreads fast and will eventually eat through the plate.
- A liner that’s moved or rattles in wind. A crown should lock the top plate in place. If the plate wiggles, the crown opening was sized wrong or has crumbled around the liner, and it needs attention before the flexliner torques.
